Have you ever found yourself planning a family trip to a big city and wondered how you’ll balance fun, relaxation, and keeping the kids entertained?
Boston is one of those cities that have so much to offer, and it can be overwhelming to decide what to do. From historic landmarks to scenic parks, family-friendly restaurants, and even a bit of luxury, this guide is here to help you figure it all out.
By the end of this post, you’ll have a perfect blend of activities to make your Boston trip memorable, enjoyable, and stress-free.
1. Explore the City on a Boston Duck Tour
One of the most popular things to do in Boston is hopping on a Boston Duck Tour. This isn’t just your average city tour—it’s an adventure on both land and water!
The Duck Tour takes you around Boston in a World War II-style amphibious vehicle, called a “Duck,” that drives right into the Charles River for a scenic boat ride.
Why I loved it: I really enjoyed this tour because it gave a great overview of many of the city’s landmarks while being super fun. The guides, known as “ConDUCKtors,” are not only funny but also very knowledgeable, which kept both adults and kids entertained.
And honestly, there’s something so thrilling about going from land to water in the same vehicle! The kids were squealing with excitement during the splash into the river, and even as an adult, I found it a really unique experience.
Tips: Tickets can sell out during busy times, so I recommend booking ahead. Plan a morning tour to kick off your day in Boston.
2. Explore Boston’s Seaport District
Another must-see area when visiting Boston is the Seaport District. This part of the city has transformed into one of the trendiest spots, offering a great mix of modern architecture, waterfront views, and plenty of things to do for the whole family.
The Seaport is a perfect place to spend a few hours, whether you’re looking to enjoy the scenic harbor or stop for a meal.
Why it’s great for families: The Seaport District is ideal for families who want a little bit of everything. It’s spacious and stroller-friendly, with wide sidewalks perfect for a leisurely walk. The area is full of green spaces, cool shops, and fun art installations for the kids to check out.
Plus, there are plenty of family-friendly restaurants where you can stop for a bite or grab an ice cream treat. The views of Boston Harbor are gorgeous, and you’re close to other attractions like the Boston Children’s Museum.
Why I loved it: The Seaport is one of my favorite places to hang out in Boston. The energy here is just different—it’s modern, lively, and always something new to discover.
I loved walking along the waterfront, soaking in the views, and stopping at one of the outdoor patios for a bite to eat.
The open space made it easy for the kids to roam, and there are so many great photo ops with the harbor and skyline in the background.
Tips: If you’re visiting in the evening, take a stroll along the water to catch the sunset.
The Seaport often hosts outdoor events, live music, and seasonal markets, so check their schedule to see what’s happening during your visit.
3. Relax and Unwind at Post Office Square
Post Office Square is the perfect spot to unwind if you need a break during your Boston adventure.
Located in the heart of the financial district, this cute green space offers a peaceful retreat amidst the city’s hustle and bustle.
Why I loved it: I found Post Office Square to be such a charming little oasis. It’s perfect for a breather if you’ve been on your feet all day.
You can just walk around, enjoy the greenery, and let the kids run off some steam. There are plenty of benches and shady spots, so you can relax while still being in the middle of the city.
Tips: Grab a coffee or snack from a nearby café and take a few minutes to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. During the summer, you might even catch a live event or concert.
4. Experience Luxury at Encore Boston Harbor
For those looking to add a bit of luxury to their Boston itinerary, Encore Boston Harbor is a must-see. This stunning resort and casino offers more than just gambling—it’s a beautiful facility that’s right by the harbor.
Why I loved it: Even though I don’t gamble, I still loved visiting Encore Boston Harbor. The floral displays in the lobby are absolutely gorgeous, and being right next to the harbor offers such scenic views.
The whole facility is beautiful, from the restaurants to the shops, and the harborfront garden is perfect for a peaceful stroll. You don’t need to be into casinos to appreciate the atmosphere here.
Tips: Even if you’re not staying overnight, the gardens and waterfront views are worth a visit. And if you’re traveling with kids, be sure to explore the outdoor spaces, as they’re family-friendly and provide a beautiful setting.
5. Enjoy Family Fun at The Lawn on D
One of the best family-friendly things to do in Boston is visiting The Lawn on D.
Located in the Seaport District, this outdoor space offers a variety of interactive activities, including its famous swings, art installations, and frequent events.
Why I loved it: I really enjoyed The Lawn on D, especially the swings—they light up at night, making it even more magical.
Plus, the fact that there are indoor restrooms, along with food and drink available for purchase, makes it super convenient for families.
When I visited, there was live music, which added to the fun, laid-back vibe of the place.
Tips: Check the event schedule before you go, as they often have live music or other fun activities going on. Visit in the evening to see the swings lit up, which makes for great family photos!
6. Take a Day Trip to Plymouth Rock and Pilgrim State Park
If you’re looking to explore beyond Boston, a trip to Plymouth Rock and Pilgrim State Park is a must. Just 40 miles south of the city,
Plymouth Rock is one of the most iconic symbols of American history. It marks the landing of the Pilgrims in 1620.
Why I loved it: This was such a cute trip for the whole family. I really enjoyed seeing the historical Plymouth Rock, and the fact that it’s right on the water adds a beautiful touch.
The area around it is peaceful, and there’s something very special about standing at such an iconic spot.
What I loved even more is that Plymouth Rock is a nice stop on the way to the ferry for Martha’s Vineyard, so you can really make a day of it.
Tips: If you’re visiting in the fall, take the opportunity to see the nearby cranberry bogs, which are fascinating for kids and adults alike. Combine your visit with a picnic or grab a bite at one of Plymouth’s family-friendly restaurants.
7. Enjoy Nature at Walden Pond State Reservation
For a peaceful break from the city, head to Walden Pond State Reservation, just a short drive from Boston. This scenic state park is perfect for a day of swimming, hiking, or simply relaxing by the water.
Why it’s great for families: The kids will love splashing in the clear waters, and you can enjoy the tranquility of the surroundings.
The park is most famous as the site where Henry David Thoreau lived and wrote his famous work Walden. It’s an easy escape into nature without having to venture far from Boston.
Tips: There’s a $30 parking fee charged year-round to enter.
Walden Pond can get busy on weekends, so aim to arrive early. Bring along snacks, sunscreen, and plenty of water for your day out in nature.
8. Take the Ferry to Martha’s Vineyard
One of my favorite things to do in Boston is taking the ferry to Martha’s Vineyard for a day trip. This charming island is known for its scenic beaches, quaint towns, and laid-back atmosphere.
Why it’s great for families: A day trip to Martha’s Vineyard is a perfect way to experience coastal New England charm.
The kids will love playing on the beaches, and there are plenty of family-friendly activities to enjoy. Renting bikes to explore the island is a fun and easy way to get around.
Tips: The ferry ride is about an hour and a half, so plan for a full day if you’re heading to the island. Pack a picnic or enjoy a meal at one of the local restaurants once you’re there.
And don’t forget your camera—the scenery is stunning!
