Discover the Best Airport to Fly into Washington, DC

airport, woman, flight

When navigating your way into Washington, D.C., choosing the correct airport can significantly impact your travel experience. I live in the D.C. area and have flown in and out of D.C. more times than I can count!

In this comprehensive guide, I’ll walk you through the three major airports serving the nation’s capital. You will receive all the essential info to decide the best airport to fly into Washington, DC.

Things to Consider When Choosing Airport to Fly into Washington, D.C.

Are you loyal to an airline?

Certain airlines have more flights at particular airports. These are known as “hubs”. One of American Airlines major hubs is Reagan Airport (DCA).

If you are racking up your American Airlines miles, flying into DCA may be your best bet with over 1600 weekly flights. American has five times more flights than Delta Airlines has at the same airport!

Are you flying internationally?

Dulles International Airport (IAD) is usually the best way to travel from long-haul direct international destinations. Booking nonstop flights is an excellent option because it gets you to your destination quicker and without the risk of missing a connection.

For example, booking a flight to IAD from Dubai will get you to the Washington, D.C., area nonstop.

Google Flights results show a direct Emirates flight from Dubai to IAD for around $1,300.

DCA airport is the closest to the metro DC area but has limited nonstop flights from many international locations.

As shown, flying from Dubai to DCA can take 18 to 29 hours instead of a nonstop flight to IAD (14 hours).

What’s your budget?

Baltimore/Washington International Airport (BWI) is the best option for a more cost-efficient way to fly to the D.C. area. BWI is a hub for many budget airlines, including Southwest Airlines. Southwest tends to offer cheaper flights than its competitors.

BWI also has many flight options from other budget airlines, such as Spirit and Jetblue.

To compare costs, let’s look at the Google Flight options from Miami to Washington, DC. As you can see, there is a Spirit Airlines direct flight to BWI for $56.

On the same day, there is a direct American Airlines flight from Miami to DCA for $278.

That’s a HUGE difference in cost. Booking the Spirit flight to BWI is a good budget choice if you don’t mind commuting from BWI into the city. We’ll break down the travel time later in this article.

Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA)

Proximity to the Heart of D.C.

Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) is the closest airport to downtown Washington, D.C. Located in Arlington, Virginia, just across the Potomac River, it’s ideal for travelers who want easy access to the city.

The on-site Metro train makes visiting the monuments and memorials extremely easy.

If the metro rail isn’t your jam, rent a car or book a private tour for your family to see DC’s top sights around the National Mall!

Domestic Flight Hub

Major carriers like American Airlines, Delta, and Southwest operate numerous domestic flights from DCA. This makes it a convenient option if your travels are primarily within the United States.

As earlier noted, American Airlines uses DCA as one of its major hubs. If you are loyal to American Airlines, flying to this airport may be your top choice.

Smaller Airport for Convenience

DCA has only two terminals—Terminals 1 and 2.

Terminal 1 features airlines:

  • Air Canada
  • Frontier Airlines
  • Southwest

Terminal 2 features airlines:

  • American Airlines (major hub)
  • Alaska
  • JetBlue
  • Delta Airlines
  • Alaska
  • United Airlines

Each terminal offers dining and shopping options once you go through TSA security. You’ll have plenty of choices to eat while you wait for your flight.

Efficiency and Security

DCA is known for its streamlined security procedures, allowing you to move through the airport swiftly and with ease.

Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD)

Gateway to International Travel

Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) is your gateway to international and long-haul flights. Located approximately 26 miles west of downtown D.C., it’s the airport of choice for those traveling from abroad.

Dulles Airport is a major hub for United Airlines.

IAD contains three major terminals. These terminals house the following airlines:

  • United Airlines (major hub)
  • American Airlines
  • Delta Airlines
  • Southwest Airlines
  • Emirates
  • Eithad
  • AirFrance and many more!

As of July 2023, Dulles offers nonstop flights to 74 domestic and 61 international destinations.

Transportation Options

IAD is now well-connected to the city via the Silver Line of the Washington Metrorail, making it accessible for city-bound travelers.

If you prefer to go to DC by car, Uber can cost $60 to $100. Costs fluctuate depending on demand at the time of booking. It takes around 45 minutes to get to the center of DC.

Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI)

Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) is located about 32 miles northeast of downtown D.C. and serves as a hub for Southwest Airlines.

BWI offers a wide range of domestic and international flights through various carriers such as:

  • Southwest (major hub)
  • American Airlines
  • Delta Airlines
  • Spirit
  • Frontier Airlines
  • United
  • JetBlue

Transportation Options

BWI is conveniently connected to Amtrak’s rail system, making it an excellent choice for travel to DC’s Union Station by train.

If you prefer to go to DC by car, Uber can cost $60 to $100. Costs fluctuate depending on demand at the time of booking. It takes around 45 minutes to get to the White House.

Budget-Friendly

As mentioned above, BWI is known for its competitive airfare prices, making it an attractive option for cost-conscious travelers.

Choosing the right airport in Washington, D.C., can significantly enhance your travel experience. Whether you prioritize proximity, international connectivity, or budget-friendly options, there’s an airport that suits your unique needs. Making an informed choice will ensure a smooth and enjoyable journey to and from the nation’s capital.

Have safe travels and a fantastic D.C. experience!
